“There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus, who do not walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit.”
Romans 8:1 NKJV
Romans 8:1 is not merely a comforting statement; it is a legal declaration from God’s highest court: “There is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.” This judgment is final, permanent, and irreversible. The phrase “in Christ” describes our union with Christ. The moment we believe in Him, God places us into Christ, and everything that is true of Christ’s standing before the Father becomes true of us.
The Greek word katakrima (“condemnation”) refers to a judicial sentence, a guilty judgment that results in punishment. Paul is saying that for the believer, such a judgment no longer exists. This does not mean Christians never sin; it means that their sins no longer determine their standing before God. Christ has already borne the full penalty of sin on the cross. Justice has been satisfied, and there is no punishment left to be paid by those who are in Him.
Notice also the word “now.” Paul is not speaking only of the future judgment but of the believer’s present reality. Right now, before God, you stand justified. You do not have to wait until heaven to find out whether God accepts you. In Christ, His judgment has already been announced: “Not guilty.” Your future is secure because your salvation rests on Christ’s finished work rather than your imperfect performance.
PRAYER
Gracious Father, thank You that Jesus took my condemnation and gave me His righteousness. I rejoice that I am fully accepted in Christ, and there is no negative judgment against me. I live in the freedom, peace, and assurance of Your love. Amen!!!
